For SOS work, Your legacy ship should have 10-WHG-1 engines or their equivalent (3-WHG-X) at least 1 living quarters (LVQ-I) 1-FTL-1 and at least 40 ACB-1's This will give you at least 12,000 M3 cargo bay space, more is better and it wouldn't hurt to fill will ACB-1's for 25,000 cargo bay space. Stock the ship with 3,000-5,000 fuel, 500-1,000 diamonds, (for conversion to fuel with VIP) and fill the rest of the cargo hold with medicine.
The further from SOL you are the more profitable the SOS signal is! You will lose money if you pick up SOS signals near SOL, so if your ship is in Sol blind jump once. There are 4 types of SOS signals.

- Escape pods, or life boats. (app. 22%) Most take 100-500 cargo space and pay $30,000 10LY from earth $300,000 100 LY from earth(up to $500K each in sector 4,4)
- Epidemic, need medicine. (app. 22%) $80-$100/M3 in sector zero, $250-$350/M3 in the 4th ring. (the furthest that there are stars, any sector with 4 or minus 4 as it's largest number.)
- Fuel distress. (app 50%) $40-$50 / M3 in the first ring, $60-$100 /M3 in the 4th ring.
- Mining prospector missions. (app 6%) The only SOS signal option whose value is tied to distance. Ignore unless you want to try your hand at mining.
- Blind jump to get 100+ light years away from earth, than start visiting SOS signals.
- Pick up life boats, sell medicine and fuel.
- Convert diamonds to fuel as needed but be sure to keep 200 diamonds in reserve to convert to fuel to get home. You don’t want to sell fuel for $100, only to have to issue fuel distress calls on the way back, paying $200 for the fuel.
- When you fill up in lifeboats or run low of either medicine or diamonds, it is time to head back. I recommend that you plan it so that you return to Sol while you are offline for several hours. (at work or asleep) If you move some of your crew from the WHG to the LVQ, you will use less fuel although the trip will take longer. (plan it so the ship arrives at earth when you are ready to use it.)
For step 3 you will need to research and build the following: 5-ACB-L and 1-WHG-L
